After Anakena, Ovahe is the only sandy beach in the island. One can
imagine canoes arriving and, failing to find either easy place to
land, turning back toward their distant islands. They'd talk of a
fabulous “Big Island” or, in their Polynesian language,
“Rapa Nui”.
This promontory off Ovahe beach was used as a crematorium as the Easter
Island society collapsed, and is a protected site today.
