The Big Three Automakers

big3_2005-09-01.jpg
Here is a strking graphic from an article (PDF) in the third quarter 2005 issue of the UBS Wealth Management magazine. Remember when the "Big Three" used to mean GM, Ford, and Chrysler? Well, based on market capitalisation (number of shares outstanding multiplied by share price), these days Toyota, Nissan, and Honda account for more than 50% of the valuation of all automakers worldwide. Only DaimlerChrysler is in the league with Nissan and Honda, and Toyota's valuation is comparable to these three added together. Google's present market cap is greater than any automaker except Toyota, and Microsoft's exceeds that of all Japanese automakers combined.
