Puna Pau (Pukao Quarry)

The topknots or hats placed on some of the moai statues, pukao, are made of a red volcanic stone called scoria. All of them were quarried from this volcanic cinder cone near Hanga Roa. Here are some of the topknots in various states of completion which remain near the quarry where they were found in modern times.

There are several scoria rocks on the site with petroglyphs, which aren't easy to see unless the light is just right.
