Emam Khomeini Square (formerly, occasionally still referred to as Naghsh-é Jahan Square) has been the centrepiece of Esfahan since it was built in 1612. At 500×160 metres it is one of the largest open squares in the world. This square and the adjoining bazaar probably has the greatest density of rug merchants of any place on Earth.
