Not long before I wrote this chapter, Mill Valley California, my home town at the time, declared itself a ``nuclear weapons-free zone.'' This was devastating to the local economy, forcing closure of Mill Valley's three plutonium reprocessing plants, the forty Minuteman silos, and the secret Trident submarine pens lurking under the physical ægis of Mount Tamalpais. Mill Valley's subsequent transformation into a kitschy tourist trap became inevitable.
